Ahead of Miss Universe 2025, Fatima unexpectedly became the center of an international controversy involving Thai pageant director Nawat Itsaragrisil.
During a sash ceremony in Thailand, contestants were questioned about missing a social media shoot.
Nawat publicly singled out Fatima and confronted her, accusing her of failing to support the host country.
He asked her: “Mexico, where are you? I heard you're not going to support everything about Thailand, is that true?”
As Fatima attempted to clarify that she was following her national organization’s instructions, Nawat interrupted her repeatedly—at one point calling her “dumb.”
She stood her ground, responding: “As women, you need to show respect for us. I’m here representing a country, and it’s not my fault that you have problems with my organization.”
