Ani Bishop Julito Cortes ng The Catholic Bishop of Dumaguete, the churchgoers “should join their hands during the singing or recitation of the Lord’s Prayer while the priest extends his hands in prayer (orans posture).”

Sa sulat na kanyang inilabas, ang paliwanag niya: “This will ensure clarity and uniformity of hand gesure among the faithful participating in the Holy Mass.”

Si Bishop Cortes ay nagsilbi dati bilang miyembro ng Episcopal Commission Liturgy ng Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).

NETIZENS REACT

Ang GIRM ay ang “official document of the Church explaining how the Eucharist is to be celebrated in the Roman Rite.”

Katuwiran ng isang netizen: “It is the only part that the faithful is in unity with the celebrant [priest]. For me, open hands means surrender and begging in humility.”

Apela naman ng isa: “I hope the Church and the Church leaders be more considerate in allowing the faithful (the great people of God) in their prayerful expression (raising hands) of the Lord’s prayer.”

Pagsalungat ng isang netizen: “The GIRM says that the orans posture is for the priest alone not for the laity.”

IS IT OKAY TO PRAY WITH ARMS WIDE OPEN?

Ang titulo ng article ay “Q and A with Fr Flader: Is it OK to pray with arms wide open?”

Nakasaad daw ito sa “Instruction on certain questions regarding the collaboration of the non-ordained faithful in the sacred ministry of priests,” na nai-publish sa Vatican noong August 15, 1997.

Ani Fr. Flader: “Likewise, not even deacons or other ministers officiating at the altar, such as acolytes, servers, etc., are allowed to ‘use gestures or actions which are proper to the same priest celebrant.’ This would certainly include praying with their arms extended.”

Hindi raw ito ipinagbabawal, ‘and so it is up to each person to decide.”

Aniya, “People should only do it with others whom they know are happy."
