Inaprubahan na ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ang boluntaryong pagsusuot ng face masks sa indoor settings.
Inianunsiyo ito ni Department of Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco noong October 25, 2022.
Sa press briefing sa Malacañang, sinabi ni Frasco na sa ginanap na Cabinet meeting ay inaprubahan ni Marcos ang rekomendasyon ng Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) na mag-isyu ng executive order (EO) na pinapayagan na ang boluntaryong pagsusuot ng face masks sa indoor places.
Ayon sa kalihim, "As a result of the Cabinet meeting this morning, it was agreed that the President will be issuing an executive order, per the IATF recommendation, to make indoor mask wearing also voluntary all over the Philippines, with few exceptions."
Nilinaw naman niya na required pa rin ang pagsusuot ng face masks sa mga pampublikong transportasyon, sa mga sasakyang ginagamit sa paghahatid ng mga pasyente gaya ng ambulansiya, at maging sa mga ospital at iba pang medical facilities.
Mahigpit namang hinihikayat ang mga hindi pa bakunado, ang mga may comorbidities, at mga senior citizens na magsuot pa rin ng face masks.
Ayon pa kay Frasco, "But generally, the direction of the Marcos administration is to lift the remainder of travel restrictions into the Philippines, and that includes easing of our mask mandates to allow our country to be at par with our ASEAN neighbors which have long liberalized the mask mandates," dagdag pa niya.
Matatandaang noong September ay nilagdaan ni Marcos ang EO 3 na pinapayagan na ang hindi pagsusuot ng face masks sa outdoor settings, partikular sa open spaces at hindi matataong lugar na may magandang bentilasyon.
Gayunpaman, batay sa EO 3, kailangan pa ring naka-face mask sa indoor, private or public establishments, public transportation by land, air or sea, at sa outdoor settings na hindi maisasagawa ang physical distancing.
Ayon naman kay Department of Health Undersecretary Beverly Ho, "Clear sa amin [DOH] na we want to continue encouraging people na hindi ipinagbabawal sa inyo na mag-wear ng face masks.
“There is also a process for decisions to be made and we are part of entire task force."
Aniya, ang ilalabas na EO ay gabay sa mga indibidwal na magdesisyon kung ano ang makabubuti para sa kanilang sarili.
Samantala, marami pa rin sa netizens ang nagsasabing patuloy silang magsusuot ng face masks.
Para kay Meyo De Jesus na isang professional artist, “Mas mura ang magsuot ng face masks kaysa magka-COVID.”
“Easing the face-mask requirement does not mean na wala ng COVID. But okey lang na ilagay na lang sa tao ang decision kung gagamit o hindi,” sambit naman ni Cynthia Duntz na isang architect.
Nagpahayag naman ng suporta si Senator Grace Poe sa desisyon ng Malacañang.
Aniya, "Loosening the mask mandate and regulations on the entry of tourists will help generate economic activities, foremost among them is providing jobs to our people."
Hiniling naman ng senadora sa publiko na patuloy na sumunod sa minimum health protocols, gaya ng palagiang paghuhugas ng mga kamay at panatilihin ang good hygiene.
"We must build on the gains of the past in the fight against COVID-19 until we cross the finish line in this health crisis," ayon kay Poe.
