Going Home to Christmas: A Jose Mari Chan Musical was so much more than I expected.
Set against the bustling backdrop of an airport, it intricately wove together stories of various people—a father and son coming home to a reunion, a busy couple taking a much-needed vacation, employees spending Christmas away from their loved ones, to name a few.
Like a compilation of short anthologies, it stirred a whirlwind of emotions—nostalgia, kilig, melancholy, and joy.
The musical also served up plenty of humor. While singing along wasn’t allowed, laughing certainly had the green light.
Despite the flurry of events, there was a sense of calm amid the chaos—a feeling I get each time I listen to Jose Mari Chan’s songs.
A round of applause for the director, Jeremy Domingo, and the writers—Robbie Guevara, Luna Grino-Inocian, and Joel Trinidad.
The transitions and storytelling were nearly seamless. Magaling ang tuhog, mahusay ang tahi.
Going Home to Christmas MUSICAL: THE SONGS
The song selection and arrangements, breathing new life into Jose Mari Chan’s timeless hits, were another highlight.
In the words of the OPM icon, "You gave wings to my songs," infusing many of them with youthful energy.
“Beautiful Girl” became a duet and a medley.
“Can We Just Stop and Talk Awhile” took on a lively, playful tone.
“Hahanapin Ko,” which, unknown to many, is a Jose Mari Chan composition from the 1980s, emerged as a soulful and powerful standout.
Bravo to Ejay Yatco, the music director and arranger.
Going Home to Christmas MUSICAL: THE PERFORMANCES
But what truly made the show unforgettable were the performers.
I won’t focus on the seasoned actresses, like Carla Martinez and Carla Guevara-Laforteza, whose phenomenal performances came as no surprise.
Instead, I want to highlight Floyd Tena, whose rendition of “Constant Change” offered a fresh twist on the original—imbued with a touch of angst yet delivered with exceptional flair.
Let me also shine the spotlight on Krystal Kane and Maron Rozelle (ground attendants), as well as Alfritz (the janitor/narrator/Maritess). Their "Christmas Moments" number was remarkable.
Julia Serad (quartet member) and Basti Santos (the English-speaking grandson) made the most of their brief moments to shine on stage.
Everyone actually gave an outstanding performance. I was entertained, uplifted, and completely mesmerized.
Whether you’re planning a get-together with friends, entertaining a balikbayan relative, celebrating an anniversary, mending a relationship, planning a proposal, or simply seeking a unique date idea, Going Home to Christmas is a good choice.
The musical runs at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati City, until December 15, 2024.
