By now, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown immensely vast and intertwined, making it easy to feel left in the dark if you're unfamiliar with storylines from the studio's previous offerings.

Such is the case with Deadpool & Wolverine, with its buffet of inside jokes, references to past Marvel movies, and appearances from characters across various franchises joining in on the fun (or skirmishes).

Simply put, this latest superhero film is a feast for comic book nerds, especially die-hard Marvel fans, who might be disillusioned with the studio's big-screen products as of late.

So how do Deadpool & Wolverine stack up to past and recent Marvel flicks?

TWO TIMES THE ACTION, TWICE THE FUN

Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) leaves behind his life as the superhuman mercenary Deadpool to embrace a civilian existence, working as a used car salesman.

However, he soon discovers that his entire timeline is at risk of collapsing due to the disruption caused by Wolverine's (Hugh Jackman) death, as depicted in the 2017 film Logan.

This prompts Wade to revisit his Deadpool persona and search for an alternate-universe version of Wolverine to reverse his impending fate.

Together, the unlikely duo encounters a host of intriguing characters, including the notable Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin)—a mutant with telekinetic abilities and the sister of X-Men founder Charles Xavier, also known as Professor X.

Other characters from the Marvel universe also show up, with each of them having a stake in Deadpool and Wolverine's mission.

How does Wolverine react to Deadpool's sudden appearance in his world? Can they work together towards a common goal? And what is Cassandra's significance in the lives of both Deadpool and Wolverine, as well as the broader Marvel universe?

As a side note, we recommend watching these previous Marvel films first: X-Men (2000), X2 (2003), the two Deadpool movies from 2016 and 2018, and Logan (2017).

Also worth seeing are Doctor Strange (2016) and the Disney+ series Loki (2021 to 2023).

If you haven’t seen them yet, all these films will help you better understand the plot and nuances of Deadpool & Wolverine.

THE DEADPOOL X WOLVERINE EXPERIMENT

Bringing Deadpool and Wolverine together in a single film is clever, especially given the stark contrasts in their personalities.

On one hand, there's the loquacious Deadpool, known for his wisecracking and foul-mouthed humor.

Then there’s Wolverine, the brooding and tempestuous mutant with a propensity for rage, equipped with razor-sharp adamantium claws.

Their contrasting personalities alone generate a dynamic tension that makes for an entertaining watch.

Deadpool & Wolverine arrives at a crucial moment when Marvel needs a boost to revive its waning box-office performance, with critics calling it a case of "superhero fatigue" — a claim contested by Avengers directors Joe and Anthony Russo.

It's also worth noting that the film came on the heels of Marvel Studios owning control of the character of Deadpool for the big screen from 20th Century Fox following the latter's acquisition by Disney in 2019.

In addition to confirming Deadpool's integration into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the studio also announced its intention to continue appealing to the franchise's mature audience.

And, boy, did they deliver!

Deadpool & Wolverine is packed with violence and irreverent humor, including sexual innuendos that earns it an R-rating in the U.S. and R-16 here in the Philippines.

Speaking of humor, the film is filled with self-deprecating jokes that break the fourth wall, where characters speak directly to the audience.

Deadpool, or perhaps Ryan Reynolds himself, takes the opportunity to throw playful jabs at both Fox and Marvel, which are totally hilarious.

At one point, Deadpool provokes Wolverine to bring on the action because that's what the audience wants to see.

It's no exaggeration to say that Deadpool & Wolverine brings something fresh to the table for Marvel Studios.

Deadpool & Wolverine is hilariously irreverent and fiercely unapologetic, yet it also has a heartfelt quality that resonates with viewers—something that can be said of all great superhero movies.

All these elements could be the spark the studio needs to regain its footing.
