Ang mga kasamahan ni Senator Robinhood Padilla sa industriya ng pelikulang Pilipino ang nanguna sa pagtutol sa kanyang hiling sa Senado at sa MTRCB na ihinto ang pagpapalabas ng Hollywood movie na Plane sa mga sinehan sa Pilipinas.
Hindi pasado sa panlasa ni Padilla at mga kapwa nito senador na sina Miguel Zubiri at Ronald dela Rosa dahil nababahala umano sila sa magiging epekto ng pelikula ni Gerard Butler sa imahe at reputasyon ng Pilipinas sa paningin ng ibang mga tao sa buong mundo.

Pero hindi pabor dito ang grupo ng mga direktor sa Pilipinas.
Sa pamamagitan ng isang opisyal na pahayag, inilabas ng pamunuan ng Directors Guild of the Philippines Inc. (DGPI) ang pagkontra nila sa panukala ni Padilla, at pagpapakita ng suporta sa Plane.
Pinanood at inaprubahan ng Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) ang Plane kaya ipinalabas ito sa mga sinehan simula noong January 11, 2023.
Kasama ang pitong board members na sina Carlos Siguion-Reyna, Perci Intalan, Ed Lejano, Marlon Rivera, Roni Bertubin, Keith Sicat, at Remton Siega Zuasola, nilagdaan ni DGPI President Mark Meily ang pahayag ng kanilang organisasyon tungkol sa reklamo ni Padilla laban sa Plane.
Ito ang nilalaman ng pahayag ng DGPI:
“A proposed ban on the public exhibition of the film 'Plane' has been making the rounds of the news cycle.
“The Directors Guild of the Philippines Inc. (DGPI) opposes moves to stop the showing of this movie, as we believe agency and free choice must remain with the public, rather than imposed by politicians.
“To outrightly ban the film, especially one already approved by the MTRCB, is a cure much worse than the illness itself, injurious to free expression and sets a precedent for films to be hostage by imagined slights to our country’s reputation.
“If the state can tolerate free expression for trolls, fake news and historical revisionism without worrying about their effect on the country’s prestige, then the state can do the same for a work that members of the foreign press have regarded as mindless B-movie entertainment rather than a reliable commentary on our country’s affairs.
“We support allowing the film to screen, informing the public of any problematic claims it makes, inviting open debate, or simply ignoring the film altogether. But we stand against censorship or banning the exhibition of this film from screening.”
Noong February 15, 2023, iminungkahi ni Padilla kay Senate President Zubiri at sa MTRCB na ipatigil ang pagpapalabas ng Plane sa Pilipinas.
Kinabukasan, February 16, nagbigay ng pahayag si MTRCB Chairperson Lala Sotto tungkol sa isyu na lalong pumukaw sa interes ng mga Pilipino para panoorin ang pelikula ni Butler na matagal nang napanood sa mga sinehan sa bansa natin.
“We acknowledge the sentiments expressed by our honorable Senators concerning the film, 'Plane.'
“Although the film is fictional, we still would not want our country to be portrayed in a negative and inaccurate light. The MTRCB will re-evaluate the film in view of the concerns and will take all necessary measures if found to be in any way injurious to the prestige of the Philippines or its people,” nilagdaang pahayag ni Sotto.
Naiipit ngayon sa mga nag-uumpugang bato si Sotto dahil ang ahensya na kanyang pinamumunuan ang nagbigay ng karapatan para maipalabas sa mga sinehan ang Plane.
