Ang Triangle of Sadness ng Swedish director na si Ruben Östlund ang ginawaran ng Palme d'Or, ang pinakamataas na parangal, sa 75th Cannes Film Festival.
Ito ang ikalawang Palme d'Or ni Östlund pagkatapos niyang makopo ang parehong karangalan noong 2017 para sa obra niyang The Square.
Kabilang sa main cast ng Triangle of Sadness ang Filipino actress na si Dolly de Leon, na gumaganap bilang toilet manager sa isang cruise ship na na-stranded sa isang deserted island kasama ng dalawang modelo at mga bilyonaryo.
Tumanggap ng maraming papuri si Dolly, na kilala sa teatro at indie films dito sa Pilipinas, dahil sa kanyang pagganap. Marami rin sa mga kritiko ang nagsabing karapat-dapat siyang manalo bilang Best Actress.
Ngunit sa Cannes Film Festival ay isang award lamang ang maaaring matanggap ng isang pelikulang kalahok, at ang pinakamataas na karangalan ang natanggap ng kinabibilangan ng Filipino actress.
Dahil din sa kanyang ipinamalas na galing sa Triangle of Sadness ay naitampok si Dolly sa isang mahabang artikulo sa Variety, ang itinuturing na bible ng entertainment industry sa Hollywood, na isinulat ni Manori Ravindran.
Dito ay tinalakay kung paano nakuha ni Dolly ang kanyang role bilang Abigail sa pelikula at kung ano ang background niya bilang aktres sa Pilipinas.
Sa kalagitnaan ng interview ni Ravindran sa Pinay actress ay may isang passerby ang nagsabi kay Dolly ng "You gave a fantastic performance" bilang pagtukoy sa pagganap ng aktres sa Triangle of Sadness.
Tinanong ng writer si Dolly kung nangyayari rin ang ganito sa kanya sa Pilipinas.
Sagot ng aktres: "No! No, no. They look at me like this. [De Leon squints her eyes and looks at me, and then quickly looks away.] And then they keep walking. They’re like, 'I think I’ve seen her before. Did we go to school together? Ah, anyway!'"
Tinanong din si Dolly kung may kasunod siyang international project pagkatapos ng Triangle of Sadness.
Aniya, "No international things. I’m going back to Manila and shooting independent films again. I have one I’m doing there and I’m shooting it locally."
Nabanggit din ni Dolly sa interview ang kanyang saloobin sa representation ng "Brown actors" na kagaya niya sa international film industry.
Saad niya, "In the entertainment industry, Black people started getting representation first and eventually landing lead roles. And eventually, Chinese and East Asian actors would get comedic, silly roles and now they’re playing lead [non-stereotyped] roles as well.
"It’s only recently that brown people are coming out. Spider-Man’s best friend [played by Jacob Batalon] is Filipino. Now we’re getting more representation, like in [Philippines-born director Isabel Sandoval’s] 'Lingua Franca,' she’s a Filipina transgender woman. But we’re still playing these parts."
Dagdag ni Dolly, "I’m just lucky I’m playing Abigail, who’s a badass. But what are they going to cast me in?
"If you think about it, none of the stories are really written with a brown Asian woman as the lead in a really good role — it doesn’t even need to be a lead, it can be a good supporting role. It’s really hard to come by.
"So I can’t blame them if they can’t cast me in anything, because most stories written nowadays are about white people."
Sabi pa ng aktres: "We have a rich history; we have a lot of stories to tell. It would be great if [Filipinos] were represented more in mainstream media. I’m just lucky I got to work with Ruben and he did this film and put us out there.
"Having people like Jaclyn Jose who won best actress in Cannes in 2016 helps. But it’s still a challenge."
OTHER CANNES 2022 WINNERS
Samantala, patuloy naman ang pamamayagpag ng Korean filmmakers at actors sa international arena.
Si Park Chan-wook ang nanalong Best Director para sa kanyang obra na Decision To Leave, at si Song Kang-ho ang itinanghal na Best Actor para sa kanyang pagganap sa Broker.
Si Song Kang-ho, isa sa mga bida sa 2020 Oscar Best Picture winner na Parasite, ay gumanap bilang tagabenta ng mga inabandonang sanggol sa black market.
Ang Best Actress naman ay nakuha ng Iranian actress na si Zar Amir-Ebrahimi para sa kanyang role bilang reporter na itinaya ang sariling buhay para mahuli ang serial killer sa Holy Spider.
