Costume designer Clint Ramos is the fourth Filipino to be recognized at the Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Theatre, popularly known as the Tony Awards.
The New York-based costume and set designer bagged the Best Costume Design in a Play for Eclipsed at the 70th Annual Tony Awards held on Sunday night, June 12, at the Beacon Theater in New York City.
Clint joins other Pinoys who have won Tony Awards in the past, including Lea Salonga, Jhett Tolentino, and Fil-Am songwriter Robert Lopez.
Eclipsed, which stars Oscar winning actress Lupita Nyong'o, is an original play written by Danai Gurira and directed by Liesl Tommy.
Set in the African country Liberia, the play tells the story of five women and their struggle to survive during the Second Liberian Civil War. The theater play opened Off-Broadway at The Public Theater last October 2015 and wrapped up in November. It was later transferred on Broadway at the John Golden Theatre last March 6.
The Filipino designer also dedicated his win to victims of the mass shooting in Orlando, California that killed at least 50 and injured 53 members of the LGBT community.
Clint said, "When I heard my name, I actually kind of blacked out, you know... I just wanted to get to that stage as fast as possible, say my speech as fast as possible because I didn't want to be cut off. They're very strict about the time."
He added, "I just thought about all the hard work that we put into the show and how amazing it is up there. I completely forgot to thank my husband..."
In 2013, Clint received an Obie Award for Sustained Excellence of Costume Design at the 58th Annual Village Voice Off-Broadway Theater Awards ceremony, a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Scenic Design, and an Independent Reviewers of New England Award for Best Costume Design. His other accolades 2009 Theatre Development Fund Irene Sharaff Young Master Award, and 2008 American Theater Wing Henry Hewes Award for Costume Design, among many others.
Clint's set and costume design credits include The Elephant Man with Bradley Cooper; Here Lies Love; Little Shop Of Horrors with Jake Gyllenhaal and Ellen Greene; and Violet (Musical) with two-time Tony Award winner for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical Sutton Foster.
His most recent project is for Frozen – Live at the Hyperion, a musical theater interpretation of the Disney movie to be shown at Disney California Adventure Park.
