Chinese crested tern seen again in Manila Bay after 100 years

Hindi basta-basta mapapansin ng ordinaryong tao ang puting ibon na may black crest o balahibo sa ulo.

Pero para sa mga bird enthusiasts na nakita ito sa Manila Bay kamakailan, isa itong pambihirang pagkakataon na nangyari lamang ulit matapos ang mahigit 100 years.

Ito ay dahil ang Chinese crested tern na nakita noong December 2023 ay huling namataan sa parehong lugar noong 1905.

Isa ito sa rarest birds in the world, ulat ni Kim Atienza sa 24 Oras nitong February 6, 2024.

Sa katunayan, pinaniniwalaan na ngang extinct na ito kaya lalong naging espesyal ang recent sighting.

Chinese crested tern spotted

Ang bird enthusiast na si Irene Dy ang nakakuha ng larawan ng sinasabing bird legend.

May nakakita raw dito sa Panabo, Davao, noong 2018.

At may dalawa pang sighting sa Pilipinas noong 1937 at 2000, pero hindi binanggit sa mga reports kung saan sa Pilipinas.

May interesting fact tungkol sa black crest ng ibon.

“Kapag siya ay nagbi-breed, nagiging itim ang kulay nito, pero kapag non-breeding, yung forehead ay white,” ani Dr. Carmela Española, associate professor sa Institute of Biology ng University of the Philippines-Diliman.

May kahawig itong ibon, ang Greater crested tern.

Ang pagkakaiba nila ay itim ang dulo ng beak ng Chinese crested tern, habang kulay dilaw ang buong beak ng Greater crested tern.

Taong 1886 nang unang masilayan ang Chinese crested tern sa Pilipinas.

At dahil bihirang-bihira itong magpakita, kabilang ito sa endangered species.
