Kinumpirma ng malapit na kaibigan ni Ingram na si Debbie Allen, producer at director, ang pagpanaw ng singer sa pamamagitan ng Twitter, Martes ng gabi, January 29 (U.S. time).
Pahayag ni Allen: "I have lost my dearest friend and creative partner James Ingram to the Celestial Choir.
"He will always be cherished, loved and remembered for his genius, his love of family and his humanity.
"I am blessed to have been so close. We will forever speak his name."

Ilan sa mga pinasikat na kanta ni Ingram ay ang mga sumusunod: "Baby Come to Me" (duet with Patti Austin), "I Don't Have the Heart," "Just Once," "Yah Mo Be There," at "Somewhere Out There" (duet with Linda Ronstadt).
Na-nominate siya sa Grammys ng 14 beses, at dalawa rito ang napanalunan niya: best male R&B performance para sa "One Hundred Ways" noong 1981 at best R&B performance for a duo or group para sa "Yah Mo B There" noong 1984.
