The Somin-sai festival in the northeastern region of Iwate, Japan is an annual tradition for the past 1,000 years. Last February 17, 2024, it was held again... for the last time. The reason: there is not enough younger generation to replace the older participants.

Isang Japanese tradition—na mahigit isang libong taon na ang tanda—ang nagbabadyang maglaho.

Ito ay ang Somin-sai festival o Naked Man Festival, isang pagtitipon sa Kokusekiji Temple sa northeastern region ng Iwate ng mga Japanese males na walang ibang saplot kundi puting bahag at medyas.

Magre-wrestling sila para masungkit ang isang talisman, na isang lalagyang sumisimbolo ng kayamanan.

Nangyari ulit ito nito lamang February 17, 2024, pero ito na pala ang huli.

Ang dahilan: Wala na kasing ma-recruit na mga kabataang Japanese males na papalit sana sa mga tumatandang deboto na kasali sa tradisyon.

Challenging na raw kasi ang mga activities para sa older generation.

Pero ayon sa ulat ng CNN, sinabi ng organizers ng festival through an online post na hindi sapat ang bilang ng nakumbinsi nilang young Japanese males.

“This decision is due to the aging of individuals involved in the festival and a shortage of successors,” saad sa shrine website ni Daigo Fujinami, chief priest ng Kokusekiji Temple.

Ang problemang ito ay patunay na patuloy ang pagbaba ng populasyon ng Japan.

Ang fertility rate sa bansa ay 1.3, na masyadong mababa kumpara sa required na 2.1 rate para masabing stable ang population.

Sa nakalipas na dekada, mas marami ang namamatay kesa sa mga isinisilang—at isa itong malaking suliranin para sa mga lider ng bansa na itinuturing na world’s fourth-largest economy.

Dahil patuloy na umaakyat ang elderly population sa Japan, patuloy ding nababawasan ang work force, at nagiging hamon ito para ma-sustain ang pension at health care.
