Leyte Fourth District Representative Lucy Torres-Gomez was among the 38 members of the House Committee on Justice who found sufficient basis to impeach Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
After 15 committee hearings, the House Committee on Justice held its final deliberation yesterday, March 8, and found probable cause for an impeachment complaint versus the chief justice.
Thirty-eight representatives voted in favor of the impeachment complaint; two dissented, GMA News Online reported.
In March 2017, Lucy was among the majority from the congress who voted yes to House Bill No. 4727, which seeks to reimpose death penalty on seven drug-related offenses.
In December 2012, she was among those who voted no to House Bill No 4244, also known as the Reproductive House Bill.
A former member of the Liberal Party, Lucy joined her husband Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez in the political party of Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) in June 2016.
The impeachment complaint against Sereno was filed by Atty. Lorenzo Gadon on allegation that the chief justice failed to make truthful declarations in her statement of assets, liabilities, and net worth.
Listing a total of “27 allegations,” Gadon has accused Sereno of issuing orders that contravened the decisions of the Supreme Court en banc.
