Japanese pop star Mayu Tomita, 20, is in critical condition after receiving nearly two-dozen stab wounds from a knife-wielding fan on Saturday, May 21.
Mayu is a former member of a Japanese girl group called Secret Girls and has been busy working as a singer and an actress while finishing her degree in college.
According to a report by The Japan Times, Mayu was waiting to perform at a concert venue in Koganei, western Tokyo, when Tomohiro Iwazaki, 27, stabbed the female idol nearly two dozen times in the neck and chest with a 8.2-cm knife.
Tokyo's Metropolitan Police Department immediately caught the suspect who admitted his crime.
The police are planning to file a case of attempted murder against the suspect.
Japanese media said Tomohiro "lost his temper" when he asked the pop star why she returned the gift he sent her.
The suspect was quoted as saying, "I ambushed her at the station and asked her [about the gift]. I lost my temper and stabbed her many times because she didn’t clearly answer."
Last month, the singer had already complained to the police about the suspect for posting obsessive comments in her social media accounts.
