Spain is home to the world's "best" beaches.

As much as it pains us to tell you, Spain is home to the world’s “best” beaches.

In a report by New York-based travel website Travel + Leisure, 579 beaches along the country’s coastline have been awarded a flag by the Blue Flag International Jury.

The Blue Flag International Jury is a world-renowned eco-label.

According to the international jury's official website, “in order to qualify for this prestigious award, a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety-related, and access-related criteria must be met and maintained.”

In other words, the jury's criteria included hygiene, sanitary conditions, safety, accessibility, lifeguard provisions.

Spain’s Association for Environmental Education and the Consumer reported that 16% of the blue flags awarded went to Spain.

This means that one out every five Spanish beaches will have a blue flag.

Spain has remained on top since 1987.
