Summer eating tips: What doctors want you to know

The warm temperature is conducive to bacterial growth in food.

Ito ang payo ng Department of Health (DOH) ukol sa heat-related illnesses dahil sa matinding init ng panahon.

Dagdag na paalala ng mga doktor, maging maingat din sa kinakain dahil mas madali silang mapanis.

Ayon sa Philippine Society of Gastroenterology president na si Dr. Ian Homer Cua sa ulat ng GMA News Online, bumibilis ang bacterial growth sa pagkain na siyang nagdudulot ng maraming sakit, katulad ng gastroenteritis.

“Be aware, especially the high heat index, sometimes kasi ma-i-spoil yung mga kinakain natin, so we see increasing rates of acute gastroenteritis at this time,” ani Cua sa recent press conference.

Ipinayo rin niyang iwasan ang pag-iinit ng pagkain at panatilihin silang “fresh."

Ang kaning lamig,halimbawa, ay nirerekomendang initin lang ng isang beses.

Reminder din ng experts, kapag nag-iinit ng pagkain ay tiyaking ang temperature ay umaabot ng 75-degree Celsius.

Ayon sa Food Hygiene Company, isang British organization, itinuturing na “danger zone” ang temperature na 5 hanggang 63-degree Celsius na conducive sa pagdami ng bacteria sa pagkain.

“The recommendation is that food is only reheated once.

“Whilst it may be safe to heat something more than once, each temperature change is increasing the potential for food poisoning."

PREVENTION AND FIRST AID

Ang payo naman ni East Avenue Medical Center Director Alfonso Nuñez, ugaliing maghugas ng kamay para maiwasan ang pagkalat ng gastrointestinal infections.

Dagdag ni Dr. Roberto de Guzman Jr., Philippine Society of Digestive Endoscopy vice president, kailangan ng public awareness tungkol sa first aid kapag nakaranas ng mga sintomas ng gastrointestinal problems, tulad ng diarrhea.

Aniya, huwag lang basta tubig ang inumin. Dapat, may electrolytes gaya ng Pedialyte, Gatorade, at coconut water.

Subalit kung nakaramdam ng pananakit ng tiyan, lagnat, pagsusuka, at dugo sa dumi, magpatingin agad sa doktor.

Sa ganitong sitwasyon hindi raw puwedeng umasa lang sa over-the-counter anti-diarrhea medicine.

Paliwanag ni De Guzman: “Remember, ito pong mga antidiarrheal agents could trap the toxins further.

“So kaya po wag po basta basta sa iinom na hindi po na-prescribe ng doktor.”
