This past week marked the lighting of Christmas trees in major SM Supermalls across Metro Manila.
Each mall showcased a unique theme for its set-up and program, and everything was executed spectacularly.
I’m not sure if SM management executives are handing out a Best Christmas Display award, but it sure seems like they should!
The biggest malls—SM North, SM Mall of Asia, SM Megamall, SM Aura, and SM Fairview—went all out with their preparations.
Even the programs were remarkable, with some featuring “firsts” in the history of tree-lighting ceremonies.
Here’s a sneak peek at what went down, along with some of the exciting activities you can look forward to this holiday season.
SM NORTH EDSA
Theme: ElfdaleAtSMNorth
The Block atrium at SM North was transformed into a magical land called Elfdale, featuring vibrant landscapes, cascading digital waterfalls, mystical caves, and mythical creatures. It was like a set straight out of a movie.

At the heart of it all stood a towering 60-foot Christmas tree, adding to the enchanting atmosphere.

Tree-lighting ceremony
On October 16, 2024, it was officially opened with no less than Christmas icon Jose Mari Chan and P-pop groups VXON and G-22 singing famous Christmas songs, including “Christnas in Our Hearts,” “Perfect Christmas,” “Have Yourself A Mery Little Christmas,” to name a few.

SM MALL OF ASIA
Theme: MOA PAskong Pinoy
The installations used are distinctly Pinoy, featuring iconic elements, like the kalesa, sorbetes carts, magta-taho, and jeepneys.

The visuals evoked Filipino Christmas traditions—makukulay na parol, aginaldo, lechon, puto-bungbong, and bibingka—with lights arranged in patterns inspired by batik and banig.
The whole set-up exuded a festive fiesta meets Pasko vibe."

On October 17, celebrities with their families gathered at the central atrium for the highly anticipated program and unveiling.

The main performer, Stell, electrified the crowd with his songs and dynamic moves, sending fans and mallgoers into a frenzy.

Adding to the festive atmosphere was the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra, providing beautiful musical accompaniment.

Everything was adorned in vibrant red—from the ribbons and ornaments to the decorations—creating a warm and elegant holiday atmosphere.
TREE-LIGHTING CEREMONY
It officially opened on October 17 with a 3D holographic holiday concert by Ralph William Datoon, famously known as Maki.

Yes, his hologram performed a full set, featuring his hits “Kailan,” “Sikulo,” and “Dilaw.”

SM AURA
Theme: Sinag at Saya sa Aura
Much like last year, the decor featured elegant beige and gold tones, with all pieces either handcrafted or woven by Filipino artisans.
In his speech, SM Supermalls President Steven Tan emphasized the goal of "preserving cultural legacy" while promoting the products of local artisans and small-to-medium enterprises.

The parol and ornaments incorporated traditional fabrics such as Bankudo from La Paz and Inabel from La Union.

The lighting ceremony, held on October 18, was simple yet captivating, with a drone serving as the tree's radiant star.

TREE-LIGHTING CEREMONY
All the guests were clad in their elegant Filipiniana attire, but the true stars of the evening were the renowned weavers from Marawi and Basilan.
Tan said some of their exquisite creations are now available at Kultura.
There was also a fashion presentation showcasing the designs of Carl John Cruz, whom Tan praised for his "unique ability to blend tradition with modern design."

The musical ambiance was provided by the Kammerchor Manila singers, performing beloved Christmas classics, such as "Kumukuti-kutitap," "Pasko Na Naman," and "Ang Pasko Ay Sumapit."

SM FAIRVIEW
Theme: Whimsical Holiday Funventure
The setting felt like an enchanted forest with lush greenery, reminiscent of a scene from Avatar.
The towering tree was surrounded by creatures resembling Guardians of the Galaxy character Groot, while fairies flutter around, adding to the magical atmosphere.

SM Fairview likely takes the crown for the most enthusiastic crowd, with youngsters screaming in excitement as P-pop group Cloud7 take the stage.
