A classic French song about enduring love has been translated into Filipino and used in a music video to celebrate the Pinoy spirit.

This music video honors the 22 Pinoy athletes who made the country proud in the recently concluded Paris Olympics 2024.

The Olympics took place in Paris from July 26, 2024 up to August 11, 2024.

This year’s international sporting event saw the Philippines win the most number of Olympic medals in all its forays in the premier world event—two gold medals by gymnast Carlos Yulo and two bronze by female boxers Aira Villegas and Nesthy Petecio.

May be a pittance by First World country standards, but a golden moment for us!

In line with this, Noel Ferrer, a producer, talent manager, and PR practitioner, has produced a music video to celebrate our athletes.

Noel is also a columnist in PEP (The Philippine Entertainment Portal), read as part of the PEP Troika, with veteran entertainment personalities Gorgy Rula and Jerry O'lea.

Titled “Kung Ibigin Mo Nang Tunay,” the song is translated by playwright and director Floy Quintos, who passed away this year.

The song is about one professing unconditional love to a beloved.

It is about moving heaven and earth to be with the one you love.

It is about one’s willingness to take on the challenges and adversities for your loved one.

The lyrics of the song “Kung Ibigin Mo Nang Tunay” very accurately describe the sacrifices of Filipino Olympic athletes to make the country proud.

It conjures images of local athletes enduring long and lonely training sessions, sacrificing personal and family time and interests, often making do with Third World conditions even as they work to reach their potential in fields where global competition is topnotch.

A few lines go, “Kung ibigin mo nang tunay, ang lahat, sinta, ay gagawin. Tala'y kayang sungkitin, sa iyo’y ihahatid. Kung iyo’y nais, gagawin.”

The music video gets more emotional as it highlights the moments of Filipino athletes during the 2024 Olympics.

The song is performed by Arman Ferrer and arranged by Paulo Zarate of Studio Z.

THE ORIGINAL SONG

“Kung Ibigin Mo Nang Tunay” is a translation of the 1949 French song “Hymn A L’ Amour [Hymn To Love]," which was originally written and sung by legendary French singer Edith Piaf.

Piaf wrote the highly emotional song for her lover, French boxer Marcel Cerdan.

Cerdan became a celebrity in Paris for a short period of time after becoming a world champion.

He had a relationship with Piaf from 1948 until his death in 1949.

Cerdan died in a plane crash in an Air France flight from France in Europe to New York in the USA, to visit Piaf who was there for a singing engagement.

The French-Canadian singer Celine Dion sang “Hymne A L’Amour” at the 2015 American Music Awards as a tribute to the many who died or were injured in the Islamist terrorist attacks in Paris on November 13, 2024.
