KC Concepcion's recent visit to Uganda has been an "eye-opening, even life-changing, experience."
The 25-year-old daughter of Megastar Sharon Cuneta and former matinee idol Gabby Concepcion intends to use the things she has learned from the field mission to improve the activities and programs of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Central Mindanao.
KC has been the United Nations WFP Philippines National Ambassador Against Hunger since 2008.
With the approval of WFP Deputy Country Director Asaka Nyangara, KC is auctioning off some of her personal belongings to raise funds for the World Food Programme.
Interested and curious buyers can check out the items on KC's Closet Fights Child Hunger webpage at eBay.ph.
This is not the first time KC is auctioning off items from her closet to support a noble cause.
"I admit I love to shop and I am guilty of being a shopper," said KC in a press conference last January 26 at the White House resto-bar in Quezon City.
"I love fashion, I love accessories, I also need them for my work 'di ba? But more often than not, you'll see them on eBay a few months later. The proceeds go directly to the World Food Programme."
KC said a lot of her buyers are Filipinos residing abroad, whom she endearingly calls "Global Filipinos."
She admitted that it is not easy to part with some of her belongings. She's happy to see them again, albeit worn by their new owners.
"When I did a couple of concerts in California, [I saw people] carrying my bags. They had my Hermes, my Louis [Vuitton], and they're very proud!" KC said.
She was amazed that some of the casual viewers-turned-buyers remember the history or background of the items on auction.
"Alam nila kung saan ko sinusuot 'yong iba diyan. Nakikita nila sa events, alam nila kung sino 'yong kasama ko. Kunwari meron akong binentang dress or top na suot ko nung magkasama kami ni Chard [Richard Gutierrez]. Tapos one time 'yong gown nung magkasama kami ni Piolo [Pascual]," KC said.
"Sometimes, these are exactly the reasons they want to buy the items."
KC knows that not everyone can afford to buy designer items at regular price.
And since the auction is for charity, she said the items are priced reasonably. This ensures a good sale which in turn, will benefit WFP without delay.
"One donor is enough to feed a child in a day," said WFP Deputy Country Director Asaka Nyangara. "So if we sell all [the items being auctioned], imagine how many children we can feed. No donation is too small, no donation is too big for us to accept."
KC added: "Siguro let us just remember that hunger is not a trendy issue... It's the most basic need... How will you fight breast cancer? How will you fight HIV? How will you clean up the Pasig River... kung ang mga tao ay gutom.
"The truth hurts, and I hate to be the bearer of that truth. But there are parts in the most beautiful, breathtaking countries, including ours, that are very different from the rest.
"As much as napaka-abundant, napakaganda, at napakabait ng mga taga-Mindanao, meron talagang mga lugar dun na hindi natin laging nakikita," KC said.
"And I'm here to bring back stories from those places... I think every Filipino should find a way to make a little part of their universe better."
