"He's a very different artist. That's exactly what I told him: ‘Son, you don't have to be like your dad. You don't have to talk like me. You don't have to walk like me. You don't have to dress up like me, but you'll have your set of wings to fly someday and now, it's happening,'" says Gary Valenciano about his son Paolo (inset).

Kuwento niya, "This started as a birthday gift. August 6 is my birthday; August 20, Paolo kept telling me, ‘Dad, sorry medyo delayed my gift.' So, ako, ‘Yeah, what's your gift ba?' So, sabi niya, ‘I have a gig and I wanted you to see my performance.' So, pagdating ko rito, August 20, we were both walking downstairs and he told me, ‘Dad, remember when I told you medyo delayed ang gift ko?' Then, he said, ‘This is it!'

"So, ako, ‘Okay, c'mon, let's go, I'll watch you na.' Then, sabi niya, ‘No, dad, it's not me.' And Paolo designed that! We had seven bands then and they did four songs. Yung last song nila was a song of mine. So, this is the Part 2 already," kuwento ni Mr. Pure Energy.

Ano ang naging initial reaction niya when he first learned about Paolo's surprise?

"Oh my god! It's emotional for me. I didn't cry or anything, but I was standing in the midst of today's basically sound, which is band. And all of them are here and some of them are gonna be here again!

"That August 20 is very memorable to me. Why would those bands do my songs? Me listening to it, interpreting my songs in their own ways with nobody telling them na, ‘O, here's the sound ha, baka hindi masakyan ng mga masa ito.' Pero hindi, ginawa lang nila kung ano ang gusto nila, which I like."

OPPOSITE TASTES. Sa huling concert ni Gary at Music Museum, nabanggit niya na "opposite" ang taste nila ni Paolo when it comes to music. Rock kasi ang genre ni Paolo, which is the total opposite of Gary.

Sabi nga ni Gary nang una niyang makitang mag-perform ang anak, "The first time I saw him, kinabahan ako, e! Kasi, iba talaga ang dating niya. But I saw that he has passion for it, e. Hindi lang basta performance para sa kanya. The same way that Gabriel [Gary's second son] has it for dance.

"And Paolo, he writes his music. He's a very different artist. That's exactly what I told him: ‘Son, you don't have to be like your dad. You don't have to talk like me. You don't have to walk like me. You don't have to dress up like me, but you'll have your set of wings to fly someday and now, it's happening.'

"Wow! Actually, there are still so many things that I'd like to do but not for myself. There are so many things that will unfold in years to come. As a matter of fact, sa November 14 and 15 is the concert, mga November 18,19, I'm meeting with my team and I'm presenting them my plans for the next five to ten years. That this is what I wanna do, this is what I see myself doing," sabi ni Gary.

Would he say na sa 25 years na nagdaan sa career niya, marami pa ring kulang?

"Marami pa," sagot niya. "Kasi yung 25 years, it's not just performing for people and for recording music. You learn about yourself and you realize na ang dami mo pa palang gustong gawin.

"I guess that's what I want to do. I want to teach. I want to go to school. I wanna go to other medium, maybe movies. To do a little more movies, to do a little more television. But maybe, not necessarily in front of camera. More on behind, scoring. Maybe, associate director, those things."

What about acting again?

"I don't mind! My doors are wide open to act again. If they want me to come out in the movie, if the story is great, if the director is great, then let's go! That's just a portion of the whole picture. There's so many things that I want to do. Pero hindi para sa akin, it's not really for me anymore," pagtatapos ni Gary.
